As part of the initiative, called Stories Matter, Disney added disclaimers to content that the company determined included “negative depictions or mistreatment of people or cultures.” Examples included episodes of “The Muppet Show” from the 1970s and the 1941 version of “Dumbo.” As he said at Disney’s 2017 shareholder meeting, referring to inclusion and equality: “We can take those values, which we deem important societally, and actually change people’s behavior - get people to be more accepting of the multiple differences and cultures and races and all other facets of our lives and our people.”Īs Disney prepared to introduce its streaming service in 2019, it began an extensive review of its film library. Let’s all be transformed by the magic wand. “The mission for the Disney brand has always been really clear: Do nothing that might upset or confuse the family audience,” said Martin Kaplan, the Norman Lear professor of entertainment, media and society at the University of Southern California and a former Walt Disney Studios executive. Last summer, to applause from progressives and snarls from the far right, Disney decided to make loudspeaker announcements at its theme parks gender neutral, removing “ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls” in favor of “dreamers of all ages.” But the entertainment giant has also found itself dragged into the fray, as with the recent imbroglio over a new Florida law that among many things restricts classroom instruction through third grade on sexual orientation and gender identity and has been labeled by opponents as “Don’t Say Gay.” In some cases, Disney has willingly waded into cultural issues. ![]() In this hyperpartisan moment, both sides of the political divide have been pounding on Disney, endangering one of the world’s best-known brands - one that, for many, symbolizes America itself - as it tries to navigate a rapidly changing entertainment industry. Lately, however, real world ugliness has been creeping into the Magic Kingdom. In case the fairy tale castles are too subtle, Disney theme parks outright promise an escape from reality with welcome signs that read, “Here you leave today and enter the world of yesterday, tomorrow and fantasy.” The Disney brand is about wishing on stars and finding true love and living happily ever after. There are a relatively small number of Orthodox Christians who follow the Western Rite. Instead, Orthodox Great Lent begins on Clean Monday. The Eastern Orthodox Church does not, in general, observe Ash Wednesday. I invite you, therefore, in the name of Christ, to observe a Holy Lent, by self-examination and penitence, by prayer and fasting, by practicing works of love, and by reading and reflecting on God's Holy Word. We begin this holy season by acknowledging our need for repentance and our need for the love and forgiveness shown to us in Jesus Christ. The Reformed Church in America, for example, describes Ash Wednesday as a day "focused on prayer, fasting, and repentance." The liturgy for Ash Wednesday thus contains the following "Invitation to Observe a Lenten Discipline" read by the presider: Nevertheless, some churches in the Reformed tradition do observe Lent today, although often as a voluntary observance. Reformed churches have historically not observed Ash Wednesday, nor Lent in general, due to the Reformed regulative principle of worship. Some Independent Catholics, and the Community of Christ also observe it. Churches in the United Protestant tradition, such as the Church of North India and United Church of Canada honour Ash Wednesday too. The Moravian Church and Metropolitan Community Churches observe Ash Wednesday. Latin Church Catholics observe it, along with certain Protestants like Lutherans, PCUSA Presbyterians, Anglicans, some Reformed churches, some Baptists, Methodists (including Nazarenes and Wesleyans), the Evangelical Covenant Church, and some Mennonites. Observing and non-observing denominations Īsh Wednesday is observed by numerous denominations within Western Christianity. ![]() Ash Wednesday derives its name from this practice, in which the placement of ashes is accompanied by the words, "Repent, and believe in the Gospel" or the dictum "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return." The ashes are prepared by burning palm leaves from the previous year's Palm Sunday celebrations. Many Christians attend special Ash Wednesday church services, at which churchgoers receive ash on their foreheads. As it is the first day of Lent, many Christians begin Ash Wednesday by marking a Lenten calendar, praying a Lenten daily devotional, and making a Lenten sacrifice that they will not partake of until the arrival of Eastertide. Īsh Wednesday is traditionally observed with fasting and abstinence from meat in a number of Christian denominations. Īsh Wednesday is observed by Catholics, Lutherans, Moravians, Anglicans, Methodists, Nazarenes, as well as by some churches in the Reformed tradition, including certain Congregationalist, Continental Reformed, and Presbyterian churches. It is preceded by Shrove Tuesday and marks the first day of Lent, the six weeks of penitence before Easter. Well, these inspirational quotes for teens will help you navigate the process of growing older. Our students have grown up using headphones daily, so the question remains whether a certain amount of adaptation would make results from today's teens different from the results of an adult or students from the past. This is an area begging for more research, especially as it applies to high school and middle school students. ![]() But the question remains: Would that final product be better if the student was not listening to music?įurther Reading: A Teacher's Love for Punk Rock Music Helps Her Connect to Students When they listen to music when writing essays, my students usually begin working immediately and almost always hand in a product. My own anecdotal evidence reveals that students see listening to music as a "reward." They refute the research that says that the brain loses focus when multitasking and they argue that listening to music helps them tune out distractions. "You could actually be singing along with what you're listening to and doing well in math." My Thoughts As a Teacher "Maybe not with reading, but when it comes to math, listening to music definitely helps," Danela told me. It's easy for me to put my words on paper." "However, when I write, I feel like music helps me concentrate deeply. "I wouldn't be able to concentrate if I were listening to music and trying to read," he told me. Taj, a senior, sees his music as his muse. What the Students SayĮven so, it's hard to convince my students that music doesn't help their concentration. In fact, in "music-listening work cultures," which students are certainly part of, there's actually a psychological withdrawal when the musical stimulus is taken away. Studies have revealed that listening to music leads to positive changes in mood, as well as increased creativity. There is a positive aspect to music's effect on work performance. Data from this study revealed, once again, that silence was the best environment "to maximize performance when engaging in cognitive activity." Further, the type of music didn't matter-eschewing expectations, classical music didn't enhance performance. One study found that the louder the music, the worse the cognitive performance. ![]() ![]() Volume plays an even more important role than the type of music played. Music with a higher intensity (such as hip hop) was more distracting and had a greater (negative) effect on task performance and concentration. Students who performed the reading tasks in silence scored the highest. In one of several small Taiwanese studies, 133 participants performed reading comprehension tasks while listening to either light classical music, hip hop, or no music at all. Research offers little to back up the idea that listening to music improves concentration. Bad Brains? Selecting the right gear is also important as this will help you maximize the action and presentation of your Kastmaster. I am always paying attention to the surface of the water to see if I can see any moving baitfish or even an injured or dead shad that may give me an indication of the size that I need to match. Once again, the ½ ounce Kastmaster seems to be the perfect size and rate of fall that triggers most strikes. When I have stained to dirty water or low light conditions Gold is preferred as it gives off more flash, and easier for bass to see.ĭepending on the depth of the water I will experiment with the rate of fall and perhaps drop down to a 3/8 or go up a size to 3/4. ![]() It’s also in these same conditions I experiment with the Chrome/Blue to see if this color produces better. Bass can easily locate the lure as it gives off a ton of flash especially in deep water where there is lower light penetration. When fishing clear water, I prefer Chrome as it mimics shad and small baitfish perfectly. My personal favorite Kastmasters of choice are the ½ ounce Chrome or Gold, and also the Chrome/Neon Blue. Here are some of my favorite colors and more specifics on my technique. I started to experiment with cast and retrieve presentations, and over time I was able to not only catch these fish below the boat, but also locate and catch those I did not see with my casting presentations. It used to be these deep suspending fish under baitfish that were the most difficult for me to catch. The Kastmaster has always been a great presentation to drop to the bottom and jig up through a school of deep fish, but getting a crankbait down to depths exceeding 20 to 30 feet is quite difficult. I had always used jigging spoons and blade style baits to help me get down to those deeper fish, but it was the Kastmaster that became my spoon of choice that has always produced best for fish laying near the bottom or those suspended feeding on baitfish once again. In addition, there are few lures that allow me to fish a baitfish style design from 1 foot of water to 100 feet or deeper and still present it in a way that triggers fish to bite. Both retrieves put out a vibration and displace water getting the attention of any feeding Bass. When using a slower retrieve, the Kastmaster gives off more of an erratic side to side wobble action. When I see fish busting near the surface or feeding I often cast the lure into busting fish where it almost instantly generates a strike. A quick retrieve will result in a tighter wiggle much like a fleeing shad or baitfish. The Action of the Kastmaster can be manipulated and changed simply by changing speed of your retrieve. Over the years I have spent a lot of time fishing the Kastmaster and it has quickly become of my favorite lures that consistently produces high numbers of Bass. The Kastmaster is also a great “search” lure to locate fish, and one of the best artificial lures that mimic baitfish. Most people would associate a spoon type lure with Salmon and Trout or even Northern Pike, but how many people use it for Bass? There are countless jigging and casting spoons on the market today, but none like the Kastmaster. I've never seen these before but I'm glad I found them. The Acme Tackle Kastmaster is one of the most versatile lures on the market today and definitely one that consistently helps me catch fish year-round. The Second Dalai Lama, Gedun Gyatso was born in 1475 in Tanag Sekme, near Shigatse in the Tsang region of central Tibet to Kunga Gyaltso and Machik Kunga Pemo, a farming family. In 1474, at the age of eighty-four, he died while in meditation at Tashi Lhunpo monastery. The First Dalai Lama, Gedun Drupa was a great person of immense scholarship, famous for combining study and practice, and wrote more than eight voluminous books on his insight into the Buddha's teachings and philosophy. In 1447, Gedun Drupa founded the Tashi Lhunpo monastery in Shigatse, one of the biggest monastic Universities of the Gelugpa School. Tsongkhapa handed Gedun Drupa a brand new set of robes as a sign that he would spread the Buddhist teachings all over Tibet. His loyalty and devotion to Tsongkhapa persuaded the great master to make Gedun Drupa his principal disciple. The young Gedun Drupa was aware of the fame of the Great Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Gelugpa School and he became his disciple in 1416. Latter, in the year 1411, he took the Gelong vows (full ordination) from the abbot.
